To start the day on a high note, let’s dig into a subject thats on a lot of minds out there right now: DIGITAL BOY & SHARK.  The bass warriors recently put together a spectacularly stompin dj mix exclusively for Discobelle.  This mix is not only prolific in that its a debut from the duo, but in that it’s also a ground breaking approach to DJ mixes entirely.  The mix, titled “The Spirit of 91′, immaculately balances a combination of rave anthems of our past (many of which have been remastered courtesy of Digital Boy & Shark), present and future- a fitting testament to sum up the explosive spirit of the D-Boy and Shark collaboration.

“Past, present and future collide as the forefather of Italian Rave music, Digital Boy, joins forces with one of New York’s most infamous bass warriors, Mishka NYC’s music man, badman Shark. Somehow we have the worst memory and definitely we have all our brain cells but don’t fault us for wanting to play this more than once, it’s been on the playlist since the early ’90s and we don’t plan on stopping now.

Inesha used to be in a turntablists crew called Alien Army that literally ruled the Italian underground for many years. How incredible is it that he now, along side Blatta, makes these heavy tunes? Really cosigning the whole turntablist migration towards dance music. More body tricks please!

9 The Prodigy – Everybody In The Place (Fairground Remix)

The Prodigy is without a doubt one of my inspirations for music but also for life, they were always seminal for their style and forward sound. Nothing better than a group that still stands their ground after so many years and can still produce relevant music. One of Digital Boy’s first USA tours was supporting them and Moby back in 1991 and there was hell to pay! The echo of destruction still resonate… and whatever you do, make sure you never touch another man’s equipment before the play!

If you had asked me one year ago, after recording the vocals for the original track, if i thought it would have gotten this huge…i would have said, of course! It is a great feeling to see an old friend through thick and thin and we couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this track. One day perhaps the world will hear the warrior edit of “Babylon” with the entire vocal session…

It is such an honor to collaborate with a legend of the previous rave generation, not only for the magic that is performed in the studio with the use of analog hardware and modern day software but also for the quality story telling. Digital Boy started touring in the early 90s when i was in Jr High School and has played along side every big name in rave. He recall this being one of the first tracks to come out of Rotterdam in 1991:” I recall going to Midtown Records and Paul Elstak (a name to reckon with in Hardcore), who at the time was working there as a clerk, gave me this promo. He told me it was his production and that DJ Rob played it out all the time at Parkzicht in Rotterdam. I was sold, the rest is history…”

13 Huoratron – Corporate Occult

Mad music from a mad man! A couple of days spent with this individual and you’ll get a perspective on the northern hemisphere. So you know, this is the real cause of global warming.

14 Lil’ Louis – Video Clash

One Digital Boy’s all time favorites from 1987, most likely the first real techno track he heard and it still holds true in its simplicity and raw energy.

15 Waxmaster – Waxscratch (His Majesty Andre Edit)

Us Italians just keep multiplying and taking over all your music. The King is dead, long live the king.

16 Manix – 88 To Piano

Will the ever be a day when DJs will pay attention to what other ones play right before them? I honestly don’t wanna hear the same track 3 times during the night. I can deal if its a genuine banger and then maybe i can go for a repeat. Well, times haven’t changed as this here was the tune everyone played over and over in Italy and Holland’s mega raves in the early 90s. The nuisance is when you are the headliner, such as Digital Boy was, do you play this track for the third or fourth time?

19 MMM - Nous Sommes MMM

All praises due to the kings of dark techno: Jokers Of The Scene, for being the purveyors of future unknown pleasures. They have always been my I.V. of bangers and this one is certainly one of them. Full steam ahead!

20 Momma’s Boy/Mikix The Cat – Party Rock

This is certainly the product of a life with no sleep, a life that thrives on big bass as its life’s blood! In between buying swanky shoes and getting haircuts, the big bad Cat finds time to produce a pounding EP. Warning: step away from the screen when playing this or you will get knocked out!

Explode with care, kids

File this one under “DIY,” too, and give it its own asterisk, double-dagger, whatever — anything to distinguish Boom Music from a slew of other Vegas home-grown initiatives launched with the adolescent impetuousness (“Listen up y’all, this is gonna be sick!”) so much more typical of new labels, collectives and weekly parties on the Vegas nightscape. Boom co-founder Pedi Amiri, aka DJ Lightknife, says the brand-new “talent management, label, artist marketing and production” entity he’s co-founded with long-time local techno mainstay Luca Pretolesi, aka Digital Boy, is more than just another short-lived strobe in the dark.

“We haven’t talked about it or mentioned it [to the press] until now, because we didn’t want this to be a traditional Vegas endeavor,” he says. “We’ve been approached by quite a few people, but talk is cheap, and we’re not at a point yet where we can take on other artists … we’re got to be very choosy about who we work with, but we will put the product out there …”

To get a sense of who Amiri’s looking for — eventually — look no further than Boom’s website at www.boommusic.net, where you’ll find a few embedded MP3s and several links to each artist’s most original (produced, not just remixed) work.

“Techno, noisy stuff for sure,” says Amiri, while still acknowledging there’ll be a little softening in his future. “Definitely a departure from that open-format stuff you hear everywhere.”

The two met about three years ago when Amiri was promoting for Venetian’s Tao nightclub (“I got into promotion because it was the closest I felt I could get to the music, but then I thought, ‘Hey, what the hell? How hard would it be to fall back on my real passion?’”) and Pretolesi was spinning stuff similar to what Amiri wanted to create in the first place. Over time, they’d amass a target market database that included industry heads, international DJs and an e-mail list 75,000-strong. More hard work and carpet-bombing promotion is the idea now, as Boom Music tries to build the bedrock foundation it’ll need to transcend the here-today-gone-tomorrow standard for similarly intentioned Vegas start-ups. As for the Boom-associated weekly parties and events? Again, not yet.

“We’ve been hit up a couple times, but we don’t want to do anything prematurely,” says Amiri. “It’s something we’re discussing and we do have plans, but at the moment, we’re focusing on the artists’ side, not the event side. It’s really hard to get something to work in this city … why rush something that has so much potential not to work?” D.S.

In his years as an artist, Italian legend Luca Pretolesi aka Digital Boy has been credited as one of the key innovators to several Electronic Music genres. Not only did he jump-start the Italian techno scene in 1990 by way of releasing Italy’s first Techno album (“Technologiko”), but he was also the first techno artist to ever have his music played in full rotation on MTV Europe.
